Far More Likely Than the “Big One”

Most Southern Californians think about earthquakes in terms of “The Big One” — the catastrophic event people imagine along the San Andreas Fault. But in reality, the moderate earthquake is far more likely to occur, and it can still turn your home upside down in less than 30 seconds.

Most homes survive moderate earthquakes structurally. The inside often does not.

I learned that firsthand during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

When the shaking started, I was completely unprepared for the violence of it. The best way I can describe it is this: imagine riding in the back of an RV traveling at highway speed, then suddenly hitting a road filled with massive potholes and cobblestones in total darkness. For 30 terrifying seconds, it felt like the building itself might come apart.

When I finally found a flashlight and turned it on, the entire condo looked like it had been flipped upside down.

Kitchen glass and dishes were shattered everywhere. Cabinets had burst open. Furniture had shifted. It took weeks just to clean and make the kitchen usable again. Like many Southern Californians after Northridge, we ended up relying on camping gear and cooking outside temporarily while life slowly returned to normal.

That experience stayed with me.

I moved to Los Angeles in 1983 during the explosion of the rock scene of the eighties, while bands like Mötley Crüe, Ratt, and Guns N' Roses were rising out of Hollywood. Long before music, though, I learned construction from my grandfather Luke, who ran a small construction business. He taught me something simple that stayed with me my entire life: do the job right the first time, and take pride in your work.

I spent decades in construction before retiring in 2018, but after seeing how many homeowners still remained vulnerable to preventable interior earthquake damage, I came out of retirement with a new purpose.

QuakeSafe Home was created to help homeowners reduce interior earthquake chaos before it happens.

Today, I specialize in practical earthquake safety improvements for:

  • Kitchen cabinets

  • Furniture and home libraries

  • Mirrors and wall art

  • Display cabinets and garage storage

The goal is simple: reduce dangerous movement, broken glass, falling objects, disruption, and avoidable damage during the moderate earthquakes Southern Californians are far more likely to experience.

Because the earthquake your home survives may still destroy your plans.

“The earthquake your home survives may still destroy your plans.”
